Decision – Commitment - Persistence – Success

Something happened to me the other night that I have to share.  What happened wasn’t earth shattering or life threatening; as a matter of fact it didn’t even sink in until several days later.  As many of you know that follow my blog, I have recently started the P90X challenge.  It is a nutrition and exercise program that can be done at home in about an hour a day.  I have been diligent about making sure that I keep up with it every day and I am telling my friends and family about it not only to share my experience but to keep me focused and committed as well.  This post isn’t about P90X though, it is about the journey they everyone needs to go on to be successful and what can be expected along the way.

Every Wednesday, I get together with four of my friends and we play music.  We have a band called Lucky Dog and we spend the time hanging out together, rehearsing and just sharing our life experiences.  Of course I mentioned to them that I had been doing P90X and they in turn encouraged me which was great.  It is what happened next that spawned me to write this blog post.  One of my friends looked at me and said “Kelly, you are one of the most amazing people that I have ever met. When you put your mind to something, you do it all the way.  I am so impressed with you.”  At that moment, I just said “Thank You” and we finished our rehearsal as always.  What he said didn’t sink in until the following Friday morning but after I thought about it for a while, it was one of the highest complements than anyone has ever given me.

There will be challenges… Count on it.
Decision – Commitment – Persistence – Success

I have had my share of challenges in my life but I have grown enormously because of them.  In a lot of ways, I have to be grateful for the bad times because they molded me into what I am today.  The old saying “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” is so true.  I approach everything very methodically now but more importantly, everything I do includes a decision, a commitment to that decision and the persistence to see it through to success.  The important thing is about this process is that you can’t get to success without the other three elements.  If you skip a step (which I have done) you will most likely fail because each one is just as important to the process as the other.  Using P90X as an example, I have read that the majority of people quit in the first two weeks.  The reason is that people make the decision to do P90X but they fail at making the commitment that will ultimately lead to success.  This is true for every single thing that you do in life.  Do you want to make more money?  Do you want a better job? Do you want to be healthier?  Do you want to spend more time with your family?  Do you want to travel and see the world?  I don’t know what you want in life but no matter what it is, you need to decide to do it, commit to the process, have the persistence to stick to it through thick and thin and that will lead to success.  There is no way that you can decide to do something, stick to it for two weeks and succeed.  Most things that are worth-while are life-long commitments.   It’s not the finish line that defines success but the journey it takes to get you there.  Success at anything takes complete and total commitment and persistence so that the sustainability of your decision can be realized.

I want to thank my friend for reminding me that I am on the right path to succeed at anything I put my mind to.  You know when the changes that you have made in your life are working when other people notice.
